Small planes are going to be the weapon of the future for Islamist operatives. I'm surprised it's taken them this long to use them. I'm surprised they tried it in Saudi Arabia first, since that blows the scheme and the secular security apparatus will now have a chance to focus on small plane security issues.

Saudi Police Foil Airliner Attack

I've written numerous times that the best way to cause widescale destruction of the type currently being hyped by Islamists would be to detonate a small nuclear device in a small plane over a US city. If America is to suffer spectacular "back breaking assaults" by Islamists, it can only happen with multiple nuclear strikes (here an excerpt from linked story):

DUBAI, DECEMBER 26: A London-based Arab magazine said on Friday that Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has vowed to launch a ‘‘back-breaking attack’’ on the US by February, confirming an earlier message by the militant network. The weekly al-Majalla said it received an e-mail from Abu Mohammed al-Ablaj, a little known Al Qaeda member, saying bin Laden would release a video tape in which he affirms his group’s determination to fight the US.

‘‘A messenger of bin Laden informed him (Ablaj) that the Al Qaeda leader will appear on a televised tape after the execution of an operation which bin Laden described as back-breaking and which would change the order of things,’’ al-Majalla said in a report in its latest edition.

‘‘They (Americans) should prepare...their coffins, hospitals and graves. The coming days will be full of surprises and great events which will make them a historic example,’’ the magazine quoted Ablaj as saying. The report came after US officials ordered their colour-coded alert system raised to orange, the second highest level, citing possible year-end attacks.

Less than nuclear it won't be spectacular, less than multiple it won't be back-breaking.

Attack Until America Is Defeated

Al-Qaeda issues fresh threat

December 26, 2003 - 8:05AM

Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden will issue the next of his video messages after a massive attack on US territory, Saudi weekly Al-Majallah quotes an official of the terror network as saying, in its next edition.

Quoting an e-mail received from a man who goes by the name of Abu Mohammed al-Ablaj, the weekly reports that "an emissary of bin Laden has informed me that the al-Qaeda chief's (next) appearance (on video cassette) will come after a deadly, far-reaching operation on American territory.

"In the video, bin Laden will evoke the success of his backers in once again striking the United States to the core and America's failure (in its anti-terrorist campaign) both outside and inside the country," the al-Qaeda official was reported as saying in the e-mail.

"Bin Laden will also reaffirm al-Qaeda's determination to continue its war against America, until its defeat," said the message from Ablaj, who last February announced to the Saudi weekly that bin Laden would release a video statement after the US-led war in Iraq.

The most recent message alleged to be from bin Laden was an audiotape broadcast last week by Dubai-based Al-Arabiya satellite channel, but its Qatar-based rival Al-Jazeera said the tape was the same one it had aired more extensively on October 18.

Both Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya, the leading Arab news channels, have been accused by US officials of inciting violence by airing such tapes of al-Qaeda leaders as well as those of deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein before he was captured by US forces on December 13. They have denied the charge.

A day before the alleged bin Laden tape was aired, Al-Jazeera broadcast a tape purported to be from bin Laden's right-hand man Ayman al-Zawahiri, in which he said the Americans were beginning to stagger under the blows of al-Qaeda.

A US intelligence official said in Washington that CIA analysts had concluded that the Zawahiri tape was "most likely" authentic.

The report in the Saudi weekly came as Americans celebrated a nervous Christmas under heightened terrorist alerts and tight security nationwide.

Most of the people I know say "talk is cheap" or some such thing, when one of these threats is issued by the Islamists.

The part that is striking is that Bin Laden is quoted as saying that Al Qaeda will continue its assault until America is defeated. It seems that at their present rate that will take several lifetimes. America might defeat itself, and I suppose that is what Bin Laden and his jihadis really hope for. If they inflict enough blows over a long enough period of time, America might be rent asunder by its own internal political conflicts, or collapse because of economic problems, like the Soviet Union did.

But the economy of the United States today can't be compared to the economy of the Soviet Union, the numbers in the US are real, not fabricated, and so it seems that hope is a long shot at best.
